Latest live recordings of solo Piano pieces

Live recordings of solo Piano:

paul noble performing liveLive recordings are always a challenge: you have to be able to play your piece perfectly!

Therefore, recently I performed the four pieces below at the local Gosport URC church Diamond anniversary concert.  As I wasn’t able to record the actual concert I recorded my practice sessions at the church:

What about you? Instead of listening to me playing if you play the Piano yourself,  why not have a go at my music.  Piano sheet music for many of my pieces are available to purchase here.

Getting into Classical Music

Classical music. How do you get in to it? Where do you start? Personally I started collecting Classical records when I was sixteen – my parents didn’t like me listening to pop music: so I listened to the pop group Abba in secret -and bought classical records starting with Tchaikovsky which I blasted out at top volume to my parents discomfort and dismay! Indeed, the music of Tchaikovsky is very accessible with big tunes and colourful orchestrations – so maybe it is a good place to start?

A historical roadmap to classical music

However, its probably quite helpful to begin with a historical roadmap as each period of classical music history reflects the styles and culture of the day. The music that has lasted and is truly ‘classical’ however, transcends just these classicalstereotypes and speaks to each age. By the way, the word ‘classical’ is a broad church of a word as demonstrated by the successful radio station Classic FM. Classical in the narrow sense of the word then, covers a relatively short period of musical history from around (1750–1820) and involves three main composers: Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. This is called the ‘Classical Period.’ Other periods of classical music are the Baroque, Romantic and Modern.

Heavy?

Why do some perceive Classical music as ‘heavy’ or difficult though? It’s certainly not because its un-melodic. Indeed, classical music uses much of the same harmonic and melodic language that popular music does and pop music has borrowed much from these musical roots. I mean, even getting into ‘pop music’ requires an understanding of the different genres just like any language: blues, rock, heavy metal, jazz and so on.

Novel or short story

In my opinion, the supreme achievement of the Classical composers is their ability to develop music ideas to sustain the interest of the listener longer than the typical three minute duration of the average pop song. Prog-rock musicians have of course tried  – in my opinion mostly unsuccessfully! Classical music therefore, tells a story but it’s a novel like Lord of the Rings rather than a short story by Raymond Chandler. It has characters or themes that contrast and develop but I’ll be explaining all that later.

Next time I’m going to start with an introduction to the Baroque period of Classical music.

Patreon: a new way to support musicians

paul writing music for his patreon subscribersPatreon is a great  new way to support new artists and musicians. As a friend and fan of my music, I wondered if you would consider helping me in a small way? I’ve signed up with a very innovative website www.patreon.com/paulnoblecomposer; designed to help struggling composers and songwriters like myself connect and be supported by their fans.

Patreon – How does it work?

When you sign up as a patron, you agree to support me with at least $1 (£0.76) per month or more if your feeling particularly generous! – paid through the secure site. (You can cancel any time).

In return, I will be posting creative content some of which is only available to my patrons. This includes MP3 downloads of any new music I write and record; sneak peeks; music videos and Piano scores.

How does your patronage help?

As more patrons sign up, it will mean I can grow what I do as I will be able to dedicate more time and effort.

Secondly, it will give me greater incentive to write, as I know my fans are enjoying the music and excited about the next upcoming track!

PS we have 107 symphonies by the composer Joseph Haydn because of the patronage of  Prince Nikolaus Esterházy.

Please be my patron! I may be the next Classic FM star?

Piano score – Summer Storms

Summer Storms in  an impressionistic and dramatic intermediate solo Piano piece probably  influenced by Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas.

To play it well, practice your scales and arpeggios!

In this music, I play around with diminished chords. They are really useful if you want to modulate (change key) to distant keys. They act as a sort of a pivot or bridge.

A sample of the first page can be seen below.  The complete piece can be purchased online from SMP Press.

summer

How did this piece begin?

How did this piece begin you may ask? The main idea for this piece is the G minor riff heard in the first 8 bars.  (A)

Part A – The exposition

The next 8 bars are a staccato theme in G minor. (B)   When this finished the music  modulates to a flowing theme in Bb (C)  ( the relative major).  The whole exposition is then repeated and changes key to D minor.

Part  B – The Development

The development section of a classical piece is what creates dramatic interest and contrast.

At bar 28  the opening riff  is reiterated in D minor.  Then, it modulates dramatically using diminished chords and ends up in the key of Eb major.

Bar 41 starts a new slow nostalgic and hymn like theme in Eb. (D) This theme is then modulated to the key of A major and develops both melodically and in the accompaniment.

At bar 76 the riff reappears  and modulates the music back to D minor.
Next, we develop the staccato theme quoting both it and it the riff. Bar 96 starts another modulation transition as we use a D7 and G7 chord to change key to C minor.

Bar 100 is a repeat of the previous development idea but now in C minor. It finishes with some diminished chords arriving back the key of G minor.

Part A –  The Recapitulation

At bar 115 the music repeats from the beginning and ends on a  short coda at bar 118.

Piano Score for Prelude in G

I’ve finished score for my Prelude in G Major. The Prelude is an impressionistic and chilled Intermediate Piano piece reminiscent of Satie’s Gymnopedie.  To play it well, practice your arpeggios!

A sample of the first page can be seen below.  The complete piece can be purchased online from SMP Press .

prelude

How did this piece begin?

How did this piece begin you may ask? The main idea for this piece started as I played around with a few melodies based on a G Major Seven chord. ( G, B, D with a F#)

Part A – The exposition

The first 20 bars contain the first theme in a variety of forms.  At bar 21  the music  modulates (change key) from the tonic key  (G major) to the dominant and a similar theme in D major starts at bar 28.

Part  B – The Development

At bar 43 the music modulates to D minor and you hear a minor version of the theme with a blues feel to the harmony.

The theme modulates to the relative  F major version at bar 50. (The relative major of D minor).

We change key again at bar 58 arriving in C major or the sub-dominant version of the theme.

Part A –  The Recapitulation

The music modulates back to the tonic key of G major at bar 74 repeating the   whole of first G major section.

The piece ends  at  a short coda with a G blues scale and some jazzy sounding chords. In all, you can think of the piece as a theme and variations – simple really!

Below is a sample of the first page. You can purchase the complete piece at

New Music – Summer Time Storms!

Summer Storms in C Minor

storms

I’ve been listening to allot of Beethoven lately – what an amazing composer. This piece is a bit of a homage to his Piano music.

In this piece, I’m playing around with diminished chords. They are really useful if you want to modulate (change key) to distant keys. They act as a sort of a pivot or bridge.

I do hope you like it. I would love some feedback. Its a fairly challenging piece and fun to play  – I do have the sheet music if your interested!
